I am a former traditional artist (painter / prinmaker) who ‘converted’ to photography over twenty years ago.

Skills :: Trad Art
Photographer (black and white processing and printing in a former life!), painter (Oils, Acrylics, Watercolours), printmaker (etching, engraving, aquatint, stoneground aquatints, lithography, screen-print [including UV], woodcuts), (hand) bookmaker.

Skills :: Digital
Photoshop (from 1995), Quark Xpress, Illustrator, Director, Flash, Dreamweaver, Word, Excel (from many years ago!), Final Cut Pro, iDVD, ATP Typesetting (GQ +Vogue), Lenticular and Vinyls for light boxes. Self taught Maya artist (2 years of graft!) with MEL coding.

I have experience in HTML, COBOL, CSS, PHP, Flash and Director. Plus, completed the advanced web technologies course at Liverpool University in 2003.

Also:
Ass / Art Director on 2 short films.

Worked for 18 years as a creative photography tutor (Art Therapies) and Mary Seacole House, Upper parliament Street, Liverpool.

Commericial
I work to produce images that tell a story (sometimes in one image!). I now work with digital cameras after many years with film and bring my fine art ethos to every commercial project. This enables me to give a unique feel and look to the work.

Art:
My work has a visceral meaning that belies its visual surface / process, and the process is as important as the final show. I try and not use the same methods for each project, this brings a fresh impetuous to truly explore all the possibilities.

Each project often consists of multiple works, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.
My work has progressed (in the early years) from single image statements to multi image series.

Recomendations:

Nick Birkinshaw
hired Matthew as a photographer & exhibition design in 1995, and hired Matthew more than once
“Matthew’s work for the Ellesmere Port Bicentenary exhibition programme was delivered with a very high degree of attention to detail, well researched, with a very effective result that pleased all the stakeholders from the local authority and private sector supporters, from the wider community and specialist interest groups such as local history and canal heritage societies. I’d happily work with him again.”

Vincent Cleghorne
hired Matthew as a Photographer in 2009, and hired Matthew more than once
“Matthew Thomas does exactly what it says on the can; he is a very skilled photographer and an extremely talented artist. I have, in the past, worked with professionals who claim to have both these talents, but have unfortunately proved to have only one and not the other.
Matthew’s skill for combining his talents is only surpassed by the pleasure in watching him create his commission and carry it through from a rough outline to a portfolio of excellence.
I have had the opportunity to employ Matthew’s services and can recommend his creative skills to any company that is seriously seeking photographic, artistic, and creative input of the highest calibre.”

Tom Donohue
“Matthew is that rare photographer : a creative force ; an inspired and inspiring artist.
His use of multi- dimensional artwork and subject bring together art and photography to another level to most-a different perspective visually., and thought provoking mentally- his work ” makes the viiewer think…..

Matthew’s skill and craft is peerless, in my estimation .I am Fine Artist and Illustrator and I find so much to admire in his work. It is my intention to work with Matthew again , as I know he can offer real and productive helpand advise to me own artwork ( he has already given me great advise and support which I have benefited from )

Matthew and were both featured in the Object of Dream Magazine and the O.Of D ” Out of the Pages ” exhibition at the View 2 Gallery , Matthew Street , Liverpool in Feb.2011

I highly recommend Mathew and his work : it is of the highest standard and he is also very personable and engaging.
